How Would You Use $50? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Recently, we saw this story about an Ohio pastor, Rev. Hamilton Coe Throckmorton, who made news by his raising money for the church in a rather unorthodox way. He gave each one of his congregation members $50 and challenged them to double their money in seven weeks, with the proceeds to go toward church missions. (http://www.madison.com/wsj/topstories/index.php?ntid=263791) Not only did this task bring the church together and raise over $38,000(!), but it also helped everyone find and focus on his or her God-given talent - and do something enjoyable in the process. How would *you* have used the $50 - what talents do you have that you could put to use? We've all been blessed with talents we can use to help others.
If only Rev. Throckmorton and his congregation had known about the Vesper Service Network. So far, Vesper Advisors have used their $50 investments to save over $10,000 for our member clients, money that can now be used instead for mission. By offering their time and talent they are creating value for the organizations that need their help. And some Vesper Advisors have chosen to donate their fee to their favorite charity, creating even more value from their work. Find out more at http://www.vesperservice.net/fastfacts.php |
What Our Advisors Are Saying ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Recently, Sarah Kerkman, a Vesper Advisor, helped an organization conduct research interviews with some of its constituents. Using this information, the organization created new marketing materials to reach more people with its message. Here's what Sarah had to say about her experience. "I completely enjoyed the opportunity to use my skills in this project. I like the Vesper Service Network's focus on helping not-for-profit groups, which most often have limited resources, reach their goals to improve. The Vesper Service Network allows both organizations and advisors to work with each other to reach desired outcomes." When asked what she would tell others about becoming a Vesper Advisor, Sarah had this to say. "The ability to use your talents to assist organizations in reaching their goals is both satisfying and rewarding. So often we want to help, yet are unaware of who could use that help, and VSN allows us to know our efforts are both needed and welcomed." Thanks, Sarah, for your good work. |
Health Benefits of Faith ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the last newsletter, we talked about the health benefits of volunteering. Because the Vesper Service Network connects people of faith to opportunities to better their communities, we know that our faith is an important part of our lives. So we were excited to see the following article that talks about the positive effects of faith on one's health. According to an article concerning spirituality and families' health (http://kidshealth.org/parent/emotions/feelings/spirituality.html), more attention is now being paid to the link between the two: "Studies show that religion and faith can help to promote good health and fight disease by: offering additional social supports, such as religious outreach groups improving coping skills through prayer and a philosophy that all things have a purpose"
And more studies are underway: "A belief in God may improve a person's physical health, according to University of Chicago researchers who are launching the first comprehensive study to examine the relationship between religious attitudes and health." (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/22780.php) As the awareness of a possible link grows, doctors are taking notice. According to results from a study published in Archives of Internal Medicine, a "new survey finds that 85 percent of U.S. doctors believe religious faith can help patients have a good outcome."
